Overview
Meibomian gland expression is an in-office procedure used to treat Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), a common cause of evaporative dry eye. The meibomian glands-located along the eyelid margins-produce the oily layer of the tear film. When these glands become blocked, symptoms of dryness, irritation, and fluctuating vision can occur. Expression helps restore normal gland function and improve tear stability.
Who Is This For?
Patients with:
1. Persistent dry eye symptoms
2. Eyelid inflammation or blepharitis
3. Contact lens intolerance
4. Fluctuating or blurry vision
5. Symptoms that do not improve with lubricating drops alone
MGD is often chronic and progressive. Early treatment may help prevent gland loss.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Meibomian gland expression is performed in the office and typically takes only a few minutes:
1. The lids are gently warmed or treated with a heating device to soften the meibum.
2. The clinician applies controlled pressure along the eyelid margin with a sterile instrument.
3. Blocked oils are released, allowing the gland to resume more normal function.
Patients may feel mild pressure but generally no significant discomfort. There is no downtime.
Benefits
1. Improves tear film stability
2. Reduces dry eye symptoms
3. Relieves eyelid heaviness and irritation
4. Enhances comfort for contact lens wearers
5. Supports long-term eyelid health
Expression is often combined with other dry eye treatments, including lid hygiene, prescription drops, thermal therapy, and omega-3 supplementation.
Follow-Up
Most patients benefit from a series of treatments, depending on the severity of obstruction. Your clinician will recommend a personalized plan based on gland imaging, symptoms, and clinical findings.
